HOW EXPENSIVE IS IT TO REMOVE BATS?

Bats are one of the most difficult species to remove. They can enter a home through a crack as small as .25” and they prefer to enter homes at the highest possible point. They can have multiple entry points in a building that have been active over time and there are almost always other potential entry points. All entry points have to be sealed and one way doors must be installed and removed once the bats are out. This makes long ladders, hydraulic lifts, and special fall prevention equipment necessary. Equipment has to be set up in multiple locations. All the extra equipment cost and set up time adds significantly to project cost.

The cost of bat removal varies greatly. On the cheaper end of the scale I have quoted projects that were as little as $350 for a single entrance point without extra screening or sealing however, this is below the average. Conditions that drive up price include difficult access, larger homes, and older homes with decay issues, etc. Homes that fall into one of these classes can have estimates that run into the thousands.

Log cabins and exposed wood construction tend to be more expensive than other home types because wood tends to expand and contract or buckle leaving gaps that allow entrance by bats. Wooden board and batten in general is the worst because of the cracks that it develops as it weathers. Most construction techniques fail at specific points creating “bottlenecks” that the bats can enter through. Bottlenecks are much easier to repair than the failure of an entire side of the home.

Material cost for a bat project is relatively low. Caulk, screen, and caulk backing materials are mostly what is needed to seal the cracks on the exterior of a home. Materials are usually under $150 for most projects.

As time passes colonies can grow and guano accumulates daily. Homes with bat colonies often have bats show up in living areas. It is recommended that these colonies be dealt with as soon as possible. Bat colonies also present health risks. For more on rabies risk, check out our page on Rabies Occurrence in the Tri-Cities Area. Getting an exact quote requires a visit to the site. Bat season is very busy so it is good to schedule this as soon as possible.
